Grove Park Inn, on the slopes above Asheville, North Carolina, opened in 1913 as a resort hotel for winter and summer visitors drawn to the mountain air. Patent medicine magnate Edwin Wiley Grove financed the project, and its massive granite and native stone walls set it apart from the city's brick downtown. Asheville in these years depended on tourism, health seekers who came for the climate, and the rail lines that carried them into the Blue Ridge. The town had also gained national attention as a place to recover from tuberculosis and other ailments, and the new inn was meant to draw wealthier guests from the Northeast and the South. For local residents, the hotel quickly became a landmark that marked Asheville's ambitions as a destination.
