Asheville, North Carolina, in 1914 was a mountain resort and health destination that drew visitors by rail, with the Southern Railway serving the town and tourists arriving for the mineral springs and cool summers. The Normal-Collegiate Institute, a Presbyterian school for young women, was one of the town's educational institutions, preparing students as teachers and offering a college-preparatory course. Schools like this one gave Asheville a reputation beyond its hotels, since families who came for the climate often looked for good schooling for their daughters. The town was also growing around its tourism, real estate, and the nearby Biltmore Estate, which employed many local workers. Residents of the period would have known the institute as one of the established fixtures of their city's church and civic life, and this photograph records the campus and its students at a time when the region was still shaped by the railroad and the resort trade.
