Asheville, North Carolina, in 1910 was a mountain town whose economy rested on tourism, health seekers drawn by its mild climate, and rail links through the Southern Railway. The Normal and Collegiate Institute, a school founded in the 1880s to train African American students, shows another side of the city's life. Under segregation, Black residents in Asheville built their own schools, churches, and civic institutions, and schools like this one trained teachers who staffed classrooms across the region. The photograph by Herbert W. Pelton captures the campus at a time when public education for Black North Carolinians was still underfunded and often limited, yet widely valued by families who sent their children there. Its buildings and grounds reflect the commitment of church missionaries and local supporters who kept the school going through the early twentieth century.
