Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1909 was a railroad junction and a growing manufacturing town, with textile mills and tobacco works drawing workers from the surrounding Piedmont farms. The State Normal and Industrial School, the state-supported college for women that Charles Duncan McIver had founded in 1891, stood at the center of the town's civic life and was known across the state as a training ground for teachers. Its brick buildings on the hill and their wide grounds would have been a familiar sight to residents, students, and visitors arriving by train. The school's graduates were carrying its methods into classrooms across North Carolina, and the campus was one of the places where the town's ambitions for education were most visible.
