Cherokee, North Carolina, in 1909 was the seat of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, whose people had stayed in the southern Appalachians after the forced removals of the 1830s and held their land on the Qualla Boundary. The Indian School, run by the federal Indian Service, was meant to teach children English and practical trades, and for many families it was also a place where children were separated from home for long stretches. Life on the reservation rested on small farming, craft work such as basketry, and wage labor, while the logging and timber industry was expanding through the surrounding mountain counties. This photograph shows the school's students and grounds as the Cherokee community lived through that period of schooling policy and economic change.
