Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1909 was becoming one of the main cotton manufacturing centers of the Piedmont, where mills had multiplied since the 1880s and drew their workforce from surrounding farm families. The McKlenborg Cotton Mill pictured here belonged to that boom, which brought new rail connections, a growing population, and mill villages with houses, churches, and stores clustered around the factory gates. Work in these mills was long and hard, and North Carolina lawmakers were then debating limits on child labor that would soon reshape conditions in the textile towns. For residents of Charlotte, the mill's whistle and smokestacks were a daily sign of the city's economic life.
