Spartanburg, South Carolina, was deep into its cotton-mill era in 1909, when the Arkwright Cotton Mill stood among the many textile plants that had multiplied across the Piedmont since the 1880s. Mills like this one drew their labor largely from nearby farm families, who often moved into company-owned housing in mill villages beside the factory. The industry shaped daily life in the town and county, from the shift whistles that set the pace of work to the churches and schools that the mill owners often helped support. Child labor was common in these plants at the time, and reformers from outside the South were beginning to press the issue in South Carolina. For the people who lived near the mill, the building was less a landmark than the place where their wages, their housing, and their families' fortunes were tied together.
