Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1909 was one of the Upstate's busiest textile towns, where cotton mills had multiplied since the 1880s and drew families off nearby farms into company-owned mill villages. The Sparta Cotton Mill was one of several local plants that turned raw cotton into yarn and cloth, and its work schedule, wages, and housing shaped daily life for the families who lived beside the looms. Rail lines running through the city carried finished goods to markets beyond the Carolinas and brought in coal and machinery. Residents also knew Spartanburg as a college town, home to Wofford College and Converse College. Child labor and long shifts were a live political issue in South Carolina at the time, and mill owners and reformers argued over them in the state legislature.
