Olympia Cotton Mill in Columbia, South Carolina, was photographed in 1909, when the state capital's economy leaned heavily on textile manufacturing. Cotton mills had spread across the Carolina Piedmont and Midlands since the 1880s, drawing farm families from the countryside into company-owned villages where they worked long shifts for wages and cheap rent. The Olympia works, on the western side of the city near the Congaree River, was one of Columbia's major employers and anchored a mill village of workers' houses. Railroads converging on Columbia carried finished cloth to outside markets, and each new mill added to the city's growing working population. For residents, the mill whistle and the rhythm of the village shaped daily life nearly as much as the government offices downtown.
