Columbia, the South Carolina capital, was in 1909 one of the state's leading centers of cotton manufacturing, and the Granby Mill stood among the factories that had turned the Piedmont's raw cotton into finished cloth since the 1890s. Like most Southern mills of the period, it drew its workforce from nearby mill villages, where families often worked long shifts and sent children into the spinning and weaving rooms. The mill's whistle and the rhythm of its looms set the daily schedule for a large part of the surrounding neighborhood. Across the state, the mill economy was reshaping towns that had once depended on farming and the railroads, and Columbia's growth was tied closely to that shift. For residents, the Granby works was less a landmark than a source of wages, and the labor conditions that came with it would soon draw national attention.
