Columbia, South Carolina, in 1909 was the state capital and a center of cotton trade, railroad traffic, and textile and lumber activity, with the University of South Carolina and several colleges shaping its civic life. The city had rebuilt after Sherman's troops burned much of it in February 1865, and by the early twentieth century its streets were lined with state government offices, churches, and the brick commercial blocks of Main Street. Railroad lines radiating from the city carried cotton, lumber, and passengers, and the Congaree and Broad rivers supplied water power for nearby mills. The panorama of the city's streetscape would have shown a place proud of its statehouse and its growing business district, a community still working through the social order of the Jim Crow era.
