Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1909 was a Piedmont railroad town whose fortunes rested on cotton mills that had multiplied across the upcountry since the 1880s. Mill payrolls drew families off nearby farms, and the town's streets carried mill workers, merchants, and students from Wofford College and Converse College. Rail lines through the city moved raw cotton, finished cloth, and passengers, linking Spartanburg to Charleston and the wider Southern network. This street view shows a community in the middle of that industrial change, when textiles shaped local life more than any other trade.
