Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1909 was a leading cotton-manufacturing center of the upcountry, where the Piedmont mill boom had turned farmland and railroad lines into factory towns over the previous quarter century. The Drayton Mill, shown in this view, was one of many plants that drew families from nearby farms to work long shifts at looms and spindles, often in company houses clustered beside the factory. Mill life shaped the city's churches, schools, and stores, and workers were often known by their village as much as by name. Textile output was climbing fast, and while most residents saw cotton as the engine of the local economy, debates over child labor and working hours were beginning to reach the statehouse in Columbia.
