Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1909 was one of the Piedmont's leading textile towns, and the Beaumont Cotton Mill was one of the many factories that had reshaped the region since the 1880s. Cotton spinning and weaving had drawn thousands of families off farms and into mill villages, where whole households often worked the looms and spindles. Railroads carried raw cotton in and finished yarn and cloth out, linking local mills to markets across the country. Mill owners and civic boosters promoted the industry as the foundation of a New South, even as debates over wages, hours, and child labor grew louder in the state legislature. For residents, the mill whistle set the daily rhythm, and the factory was the center of work, church, and neighborhood life.
