Washington Square sits at the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, where Meeting and Broad Streets meet, and in 1909 it was the civic center of a city still recovering from the economic shocks of the late nineteenth century. The port on the Cooper and Ashley Rivers handled cotton, lumber, and phosphate, and the old plantation fortunes that had once built the city's townhouses had given way to a more modest mix of trade, shipping, and small manufacturing. Streetcars carried residents and shoppers along the peninsula's main thoroughfares, and the Navy Yard across the Cooper River had recently begun to add federal payrolls to the local economy. Charlestonians of the day knew the square as a place of public business, courthouse traffic, and Sunday strolls, set among the church spires and old brick houses that gave the city its reputation for preserving its past.
