Charleston, South Carolina, in 1909 was a harbor city still recovering from the 1886 earthquake and the long decline of its antebellum fortunes, though its cotton trade, port traffic, and the naval shipyard across the Cooper River kept it busy. This panoramic photograph shows cadets of the state military college, the Citadel, which had trained young men in military discipline since 1842 from the old arsenal on Marion Square. Its gray-uniformed cadets were a familiar sight downtown, and the school drew sons of planters and merchants who later worked in the state's towns, courts, and businesses. The college would not move to its present campus on the city's northwest side until 1922, more than a decade later.
