Charleston College, photographed in 1909, stood in the older part of Charleston, South Carolina, a college chartered in 1770 that ranked among the oldest institutions of higher learning in the South. In 1909 the city still depended heavily on its harbor, its wholesale and shipping trade, and the fertilizer and phosphate businesses that had grown up along the nearby rivers, though cotton no longer dominated the local economy as it had before the Civil War. The college drew most of its students from Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry, and its classes and civic ties kept it closely tied to the town. Many residents still remembered the 1886 earthquake that cracked brick walls across the peninsula, so the rebuilt and repaired buildings of the campus carried a visible reminder of that disaster.
