East Battery, Charleston, South Carolina, in 1909 was a promenade of stately houses along the harbor at the tip of the peninsula, where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet the Atlantic. Charleston's economy had been reshaped after the Civil War; by 1909 cotton still moved through its port, but phosphate mining, lumber, and the coastal trade had grown in importance, and the city was smaller than it had been before 1861. Many families along the Battery were descendants of the planter and merchant class, and the seawall, built in the decades before the turn of the century, had made the walk a favorite spot for residents and visitors. The photographer's view captures a waterfront that Charlestonians knew as one of their city's most cherished and carefully kept places.
