In 1909 Charleston, South Carolina, was a port city still recovering from the 1886 earthquake, and its economy depended on cotton shipping, lumber, and the traffic moving through its harbor. The South Carolina Military Academy, known as The Citadel, occupied its brick barracks on Marion Square near the city's center, where cadets drilled on the open grounds that residents crossed every day. The state had founded the school in 1842, and its uniformed cadets were a familiar presence at parades and civic ceremonies. Beyond the campus, the city's social life centered on churches, clubs, and older families on the peninsula, while segregation laws shaped daily life for its large Black population.
