Charleston, South Carolina, in 1909 was still recovering from the 1886 earthquake, which had badly damaged much of the city, and its economy rested on the port, cotton shipping, and a mix of older merchant and planter families. The harbor below the Battery, the tip of the peninsula where the wealthy had long built their houses, was where Charlestonians went to watch ships come and go and to sail for pleasure. A yacht club there tied the city's social life to the water that had shaped its fortunes since colonial days. Politics was dominated by the Democratic Party, and the state's 1895 constitution had already stripped most Black men of the vote, so the club's members came from a small, largely white circle. The panorama records a city that still prided itself on its harbor and its old families, even as newer industries and northern capital were beginning to reshape the South.
