In 1909 Charlotte, North Carolina, was a growing Piedmont city whose economy rested on cotton textiles, rail lines, and trade in farm goods from the surrounding countryside. The 1910 census counted roughly 34,000 residents, and the mills and rail yards drew workers from nearby farms and small towns. Factories like the Fidelity Manufacturing Company were part of that industrial expansion, which had turned the city from a county seat into a regional center over the previous few decades. Residents of the period knew Charlotte as a place where new brick plants, streetcar lines, and railroad shops were changing daily life, even as many families still depended on farming and on the weekly rhythms of mill shifts and church.
