Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1909 was one of the leading cities of the Piedmont's cotton textile boom, when mills were rising along the rail lines and drawing families from surrounding farms into year-round factory work. The Hyland Park Cotton Mills sat among the company houses, churches and small stores that made up a mill village, where many workers lived within walking distance of their looms. Charlotte's position as a railroad junction helped move raw cotton in and finished cloth out, and the city's commercial and civic life depended heavily on the mills. Mill hours were long and wages modest, yet for many families a steady paycheck in town was a clear step up from tenant farming in the countryside.
