Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1909 was a railroad and cotton town at the center of the Piedmont's mill boom, where the Southern Railway and Seaboard Air Line lines served farms and factories across the region. The 1910 census counted roughly 34,000 residents, and the local economy rested on textile mills, banking, and wholesale trade. The South Atlantic Waste company pictured here points to the cotton byproducts that spinning and weaving plants produced in quantity: loose fibers, sweepings, and scrap that had to be gathered, cleaned, and resold. Charlotte residents of the period knew their city for its mills, its streetcar lines, and its growing commercial district, and textile manufacturing would keep expanding across the county in the years that followed.
