Elizabeth College in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a Lutheran college for young women in 1909, when the city was growing quickly as a railroad and cotton-trade center in the Piedmont. Charlotte's rail connections and nearby cotton mills drew workers and merchants, and the city's population was rising through the first decade of the twentieth century.
