Cherokee, North Carolina, in 1909 was the center of the Qualla Boundary, the mountain land held by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Swain County. The people there were descendants of Cherokee families who had stayed in the mountains rather than go west during the removals of the 1830s, and they built their community around small farms, family gardens, and timber work in the surrounding hills. Rail service had reached nearby Bryson City by the mid-1880s, which brought visitors into the region and gave local craftspeople a growing market for baskets, pottery, and beadwork sold to tourists. This panorama captures a town still shaped by its valley setting, with the Oconaluftee River running past the houses and the mountains rising on every side.
