In 1909, Cherokee, North Carolina, was the seat of the Qualla Boundary, the mountain land held by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, descendants of families who stayed in the Southern Appalachians after the forced removal of 1838. The federal Indian Service ran a boarding and day school there, where children were taught English, academic subjects, and farm and trade skills, and where many families were pressed to adopt white schooling and customs. Life on the reservation rested mainly on small-scale farming, timber work, and handmade baskets and pottery, and visitors drawn by the nearby mountain scenery were beginning to buy such crafts. This photograph shows the school grounds as the community's children and staff would have known them, a place that stood at the center of both government policy and Cherokee family life.
