Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1909 was a railroad junction and a growing center of textile mills and tobacco manufacturing. The State Normal and Industrial School, opened in the early 1890s as a state institution for training women teachers, stood on its hill in the city and was among the first public colleges for women in the South. Its founder, Charles Duncan McIver, had led the school until his death in 1906, and Julius Foust, his successor, guided it through a period of campus expansion. Students studied domestic science, teaching, and the industrial arts alongside academic subjects, and many went on to classrooms across the state. The campus shown here reflected North Carolina's commitment to educating women at a time when few Southern girls continued past primary school.
