Albany's State Normal School was already one of the oldest teacher-training schools in the country by 1909, having opened in 1844 to prepare men and women for the state's common schools. In the early twentieth century, its graduates went out across New York to staff classrooms in towns and farm districts, so the school's reputation reached well beyond the capital. Albany itself was a river and rail city, with Hudson River shipping, the Erie Canal trade, and the lines of the New York Central Railroad shaping its working life, while state government gave the city a steady population of clerks, lawmakers, and office workers. Students of the period lived in a city where the Capitol dominated the skyline and politics often shaped local affairs. The panoramic view records the school as one of the institutions that gave Albany its identity as the seat of public education as well as state government.
