Kent State Normal School, photographed in 1914, sat in the small city of Kent in Portage County, northeast of Akron, Ohio. The school had grown out of a private normal college founded in 1910, and by the time of this picture it was operating as a state-supported institution that trained teachers for the region's classrooms. Kent was a railroad town on the Erie line, and its economy also rested on local businesses such as the Davey Tree Expert Company, which had started there decades earlier. Townspeople in 1914 would have known the campus as the place where many of their children and neighbors became schoolteachers, a role that carried real weight in a farming and factory district still growing into its modern shape. Across the Atlantic, the war that broke out that summer was only beginning to reach American newspapers and talk.
