The Lutheran District Synod of Ohio met in 1914, when the state had nearly five million residents and an economy built on factories, mines, and railroads linking Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton, and Akron. Many Ohio Lutheran congregations had been founded by German immigrants, and their pastors and lay delegates often conducted church business in German as well as English while keeping parish schools running. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and German-American communities across the Midwest soon faced new questions about loyalty and language that would reshape church life. Synod gatherings like this one were among the few occasions when leaders from scattered congregations met face to face.
