Muskingum College sits in New Concord, a small village in Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, in 1914. The college was founded in 1837 by Associate Reformed Presbyterians and had long served as a church-affiliated school for the region's farm families and young men preparing for the ministry or teaching. By the 1910s the surrounding county economy still rested mainly on agriculture, coal mining to the south and east, and small manufacturing, while nearby Zanesville, the county seat, supplied rail connections and markets. A student body of modest size gave New Concord its daily rhythm of classes, literary societies, and church services, and the campus was the village's chief public institution.
