Athens, Ohio, in 1914 was a small river town on the Hocking River in the southeast of the state, and its economy rested largely on Ohio University, chartered in 1804 as the first university in the Northwest Territory, along with coal mining and agriculture in the surrounding Hocking Valley. The university was then a modest campus of a few brick halls on the hill above town, serving mostly teacher-training students who would go on to schools across rural Ohio. Rail lines connected Athens to larger markets, and the town's population was a few thousand, with college life shaping its streets, churches, and social calendar. A 1914 panorama of the campus would have shown a place residents knew as the seat of the state's oldest university.
