New Concord, a small village in Muskingum County in southeastern Ohio, was in 1914 a quiet farm town built around Muskingum College, a school with Presbyterian roots that dated back to the 1830s. The surrounding county depended on farming, with coal mining and the clay and pottery trades of the Zanesville area drawing many local workers and shaping the regional economy. Life in the village centered on the campus, its churches, and the seasonal rhythms of the school year, and students often came from farms and small towns across the eastern part of the state. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and news of it reached Ohio readers in the same newspapers that carried local notices of commencements, church meetings, and crop prices.
