Defiance College appears in this 1914 view of Defiance, Ohio, a city at the meeting of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers in the northwest part of the state. The site carried older military history, since Anthony Wayne's army built Fort Defiance there in 1794. By the 1910s the city served the surrounding farm country, with its economy tied to manufacturing and to the canal and rail lines that had long carried grain, lumber, and goods through the region. A college in a town of this size drew most of its students from nearby farms and small towns, and local residents took pride in it as part of civic life. The photograph shows the school as a fixture of a community that valued its river trade and its schools.
