Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1914 was the center of a small village of roughly a thousand residents in Licking County, about thirty miles east of Columbus. The college, founded in 1831 by Baptists, shaped nearly every part of local life, from the stores on the main street to the boarding houses where students and faculty lived. Most Granville families depended on the school directly or indirectly, through teaching, service work, or the steady trade of students. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and talk of it likely filled classrooms and the village newspaper, though the United States would not enter the fighting until 1917. For people in Granville, the campus on its hill was less a distant institution than the village's main public face.
