Middletown, Ohio, in 1914 was a small river city on the Great Miami River in Butler County, and its economy was shifting toward heavy industry. The American Rolling Mill Company, which later became Armco, had built large steelworks there after the turn of the century, drawing new workers and families into a town that had long depended on farming and local manufacturing. Rail connections tied the mills to markets across the Midwest, and the growing payrolls changed the town's streets, housing, and daily rhythms. Residents who looked across the skyline in this view would have recognized both the older brick commercial blocks and the newer mill buildings rising beside them as signs of a place in transition.
