In 1914 Canton, the seat of Stark County, Ohio, was a city whose factories drew workers from farms and from across Europe. Diebold, a maker of bank safes and vaults, had long been among its best-known manufacturers, and the nearby village of North Canton was becoming home to the Hoover company's growing plant. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and the news reached a city with many German-born and German-descended families, whose ties to relatives overseas made the conflict a daily topic at kitchen tables and in church halls. First Christian's congregation would have followed these events alongside the routine of Sunday schools and weekday meetings, when a downtown church was a place where neighbors gathered to discuss both local affairs and distant news.
