In 1912 Canton, Ohio, was a manufacturing city of roughly 50,000 people in Stark County, with steel, castings, and machinery shops along its rail lines. The Timken Roller Bearing Company, founded in the city in 1899, was among the firms that drew skilled workers and their families there. Canton was also the home of President William McKinley, whose tomb had been dedicated in 1907 and drew visitors from across the country. Churches like First Christian, a congregation of the Disciples of Christ, were central to civic life in such a town, hosting Sunday services, Sunday schools, and the church suppers and community meetings that tied working families together. Its large, formal building stood as a sign of the congregation's standing in a city that measured itself by industry and by its famous native son.
