Canton, Ohio, in 1913 was a industrial city in the northeast of the state, and the Dueber-Hampden Watch Company was one of its largest employers. The firm grew out of John C. Dueber's watch case business and later combined with the Hampden Watch Company, which brought watch movement making to Canton. Its factory drew skilled machinists, case makers, and their families into the city, adding to the steady population growth that marked Stark County's manufacturing towns in the years before the First World War. Residents of the period knew Canton as a place where precision metalwork paid steady wages, and the watch works stood among the names that shaped its working life. The photograph records the factory complex and the city around it at a time when such plants were central to local jobs, transport links, and civic pride.
