Delaware, Ohio, in 1913 was the county seat of Delaware County, a small city of farm trade, courthouse business, and local shops, about 20 miles north of Columbus. The Olentangy River runs through town, and Ohio Wesleyan University, founded in 1842, gave the city a large college population and a strong share of its civic and cultural life. Residents depended on surrounding farms for grain and livestock, and rail lines brought goods and passengers in and out. Ohio Wesleyan's campus and the downtown streets near the courthouse would have been the city's most familiar landmarks to people who lived there, and the view shows how closely the college and the commercial district sat together.
