Hamilton, the seat of Butler County in southwestern Ohio, sat on the Great Miami River in 1913 and drew much of its strength from paper and metalworking mills that had grown up along the water. Farm families from the surrounding county came to town for the Butler County Agricultural Society's annual fair, which was then one of the main social events of the year, with livestock judging, produce exhibits, and crowds that filled the fairgrounds for several days. The panorama records that gathering, showing the grounds and the people who came to see the exhibits, grandstands, and fairground buildings. Residents of that era knew Hamilton as a county market town where agriculture and factory work existed side by side, and the fair was the event that brought the two worlds together each autumn.
