Zanesville, Ohio, in 1913 was a river city in the Muskingum Valley, set where the Muskingum and Licking rivers meet and linked by the old Y Bridge. Its economy rested largely on local clay, with potteries, glassworks and brickworks turning that raw material into goods shipped by rail to buyers across the country. In late March 1913, a severe flood swept through the Ohio valley and inundated much of Zanesville's low ground, forcing residents and business owners into a long cleanup and rebuilding. Many people there knew the city as a manufacturing center with a busy riverfront, and that spring's flood left a lasting mark on its streets and shops.
