Middletown, Ohio, in 1915 was a river town on the Great Miami whose economy had shifted toward heavy industry. The American Rolling Mill Company, known as Armco, had opened its large steel works there in the early 1900s, and the mill drew workers and families from across southwestern Ohio and beyond. Paper manufacturing along the river also remained an important employer, so the town's streets and rooftops were shaped by mill whistles, rail sidings, and the daily shifts of men going to and from work. For residents, Middletown was increasingly known as a steel city, though its older neighborhoods, churches, and downtown blocks still reflected the smaller community it had been a generation earlier.
