Cleveland in 1915 was one of the country's leading centers of iron and steel, with mills and foundries strung along the Cuyahoga River and the Flats. Ore carried across Lake Erie from the Upper Peninsula and Minnesota ranges came off ships at docks on the lakefront and went by rail and river barge to the furnaces. The city had grown past half a million residents by the 1910s, and its mill workers, many of them immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, lived in dense neighborhoods near the works. Orders from European buyers after the war began in 1914 kept the mills busy through 1915, and that wartime demand shaped the industry's mood that year. Miller Studio, a Cleveland firm, made this view of an iron and steel operation for a local audience that knew the mills as the source of the city's wages.
