In September 1919, Cleveland hosted the United Mine Workers of America convention, and this panoramic photograph records the delegates and gathered members in the city that year. Cleveland was then one of the great industrial centers of the Midwest, with steel mills, machine shops, and shipping on the Cuyahoga River and the Great Lakes, so a union meeting there drew attention from both the labor movement and the city's manufacturers. The year 1919 was turbulent: wartime production had ended, wages were under pressure, and the nation was wary of radical politics. Coal miners across the country were preparing for a major strike that fall, and the convention's decisions bore directly on the coalfields of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia that supplied the city's furnaces and homes.
