Canton, Ohio, in 1913 was a manufacturing city of roughly 30,000 people, set among the steel and coal country of northeastern Ohio. Its factories made safes, carriage and automobile parts, and steel products, and the Timken roller bearing works, which had settled in the city only a few years earlier, was adding to its reputation as an industrial center. Several rail lines crossed the town, carrying raw materials in and finished goods out, and the streets below the downtown church spires were busy with workers going to and from the mills. Many residents also knew Canton as the home of President William McKinley, whose tomb was then rising on a hill nearby and drew visitors from across the country.
