Rochester in 1913 was a city of more than 200,000 people, and the high rooftops in this view belonged to a place that had grown fast since the turn of the century. Eastman Kodak was the largest name in town, and its Kodak Park works on the city's outskirts had become a major employer that drew workers from farms and from across Europe. Bausch & Lomb's optical plant and many smaller machine and clothing shops kept the valley busy, while the Genesee River, with its falls and steep gorge, still divided the downtown and tied it to the Lake Ontario harbor at Charlotte. Residents would have measured their city by these chimneys, its streetcar lines, and the bridges that carried the traffic across the river.
