Saranac Inn, on the Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondack region of northern New York, was a summer resort in 1912, part of a wider lake district that had grown up around the Saranac Lake village since the 1880s. The area's visitors came for the fishing, boating, and clean mountain air, and many of them arrived by rail, since the Chateaugay Railroad had reached Saranac Lake village in 1887. Tuberculosis cure cottages and the sanitarium founded by Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau had made the village famous as a health resort, so the lakeside hotels drew both pleasure seekers and families who stayed for the season. Guests in 1912 would have known the Inn as a place of steamboat landings, guideboat rowing, and long summer evenings on the water.
