Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, stood on its hilltop campus in 1912 as one of the leading women's colleges in the country, having opened in 1865 with a founding gift from brewer Matthew Vassar. The college drew students from across the nation, and its Gothic and Romanesque buildings, set on grounds laid out with lawns and lakes, gave the Hudson Valley town a distinctive academic landscape. Arlington, the village just below the campus, depended on the college and on the riverfront industries that ran along the Hudson, while the city of Poughkeepsie to the south handled rail traffic and manufacturing. In those years, women's higher education was still debated in many quarters, and Vassar's graduates were a visible sign of the change.
