Vassar College, on the hills above Poughkeepsie in the Arlington area of Dutchess County, New York, was in 1912 one of the best-known women's colleges in the country. Matthew Vassar, a brewer, had endowed it in the 1860s, and by the early twentieth century its grounds of stone halls, lawns, and lakes had become a landmark for travelers on the Hudson River. Poughkeepsie, its neighboring city, lived on river trade, rail connections on the east bank, and a mix of small manufacturing. Students and townspeople alike knew the college for its academic reputation and for its growing ties to the women's movement, which was debating suffrage and professional opportunity at the time. The view records a campus that was then still expanding, with its buildings set out for a community of several hundred women and their faculty.
